How To Get a CDL Learner's Permit
A CDL Learner's Permit is required for drivers who wish to to enroll in our Class A or Class B courses
Step 1 - Get a DOT Medical card
Before applying for your CDL Learner’s Permit, you must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical exam to ensure you meet the health requirements for commercial driving. A certified medical examiner must assess your vision, hearing, blood pressure, and overall physical health to determine if you are fit to operate a commercial vehicle safely. See the official form and directions for submitting that here.
Once approved, you will receive a DOT Medical Card, which must be kept current throughout your CDL training and career. Be sure to check your state’s guidelines on medical certification renewal and submission requirements.

Step 2 - Decide Between Class A Or Class B
Before scheduling your DMV appointment, decide whether you need a Class A or Class B CDL Learner’s Permit, as the type of license you pursue depends on the type of commercial vehicle you plan to operate.
- Class A CDL – Required for operating combination vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 lbs. or more.
- Class B CDL – Needed for driving single vehicles, such as buses, dump trucks, or box trucks, with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 lbs. or more.
Your choice will determine the specific knowledge tests you must take at the DMV. If you’re unsure which license suits your career goals, CDL Solutions can guide you in making the right decision.
Step 3 - Schedule an appointment with DMV
Once you have your DOT Medical Card and have chosen your CDL class, it’s time to schedule an appointment at the DMV.
At the DMV, you will be required to pass a general knowledge test, which covers essential CDL concepts such as road safety, vehicle operation, and state regulations. Depending on your chosen CDL class and endorsements, you may need to take additional tests, such as air brakes, combination vehicles, or passenger transport.
Upon passing the test, you will receive your CDL Learner’s Permit, allowing you to begin behind-the-wheel training with a certified CDL instructor. With CDL Solutions, you’ll get hands-on training, expert instruction, and job placement support to help you transition from a learner’s permit to a fully licensed commercial driver.
